Sobrarbe is a territory where geology, landscape and man are closely related. Samitier Castle and the Hermitage of San Emeterio and San Celedonio, located next to each other on top of a natural vantage point, are a good example.
From their dizzying position, they used to guard the access to Sobrarbe and offer some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Geopark. Hanging over the Entremón Gorge, with the River Cinca almost 400 metres below, the views include Cotiella, Mount Montañesa, the Mount Perdido massif and the Mediano Reservoir. Almost a thousand years have passed since work began on the construction of this religious and defensive site. lthough the inhabitants of the area were unable to understand how these mountains had been formed, they did know how to make the most of the terrain; in this case, to look out for and defend themselves from their enemies. Today we can explain how this terrain took shape and what geological processes originated them, combining natural and cultural history in a single visit while surrounded by spectacular scenery. Indeed, the views from the religious-defensive fortress of Samitier are well-worth a visit. You only need to download the pdf of Geo-Route GR 3 Geology: A bird's eye view
