GR 8 Iron Age Elements

Viu-Fragén-Broto

About 65,000 years ago much of the Pyrenees was under ice. Enormous glaciers similar to those that currently exist in the Alps occupied the main Pyrenean valleys. Today there are only small masses of ice around the highest peaks of the Pyrenees; the remains and reminders of colder times. However, the landscape offers abundant evidence that "Ice Age": valleys, waterfalls, mountain lakes, moraines... resulted from the action of the glaciers that, like huge icy bulldozers, eroded the rocks and transported them down the valleys, completely changing the landscape. By carefully observing the landscape, it is possible to deduce the existence and extent of those glaciers and the route between Viu and Broto is one of the best of the many options that Sobrarbe offers for this purpose.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Route: Viu-Fragén-Broto (Sorrosal Waterfall), along the Pueyo route (PR HU-127).
  • Type of Route:Linear (return along the same route).
  • Difficulty level:Low The track offers no difficulty but the second part (between stops 3 and 5) has a short but very steep descent along a clear path.
  • Duration: 1.5 hours (one way). As the return journey is uphill, it requires another 2 hours.
  • Length 5 kilometres.
  • Gradient: 400 metres descent (outward).
  • Starting point Car park at the Viu campsite, near the milestone 484.5 on the N-260 road that connects Broto with the town of Cotefablo (Trans-Pyrenean Axis). From the campsite, we have to head towards the nearby town of Viu, about 200 metres away.
  • Comments In Fragén we shall pass next to the village fountain. If you have various vehicles, you could arrange to leave one at the starting point and another at the end of the route and avoid the need to walk back. In this case, the starting point would be the Viu campsite and the end would be the town of Broto, near the Sorrosal Waterfall. If you wish to return walking to the starting point, another possibility is to go to Oto, from the Sorrosal Waterfall, and follow the PR HU 119 through Selva de Fragén and the Sorrosal Gorge. This would take you to Stop 3, near Fragén. From there, you would have to make your way to Viu along the track we used on the outward journey.
